Mining

Mining refers to the method by which transactions are validated and appended to a blockchain. This procedure is also responsible for the generation of new bitcoins or specific alternative cryptocurrencies. While, in principle, any individual with a computer and internet connectivity can participate in mining and potentially earn rewards, the contemporary landscape of mining, particularly for bitcoins and some altcoins, is dominated by large-scale enterprises due to the significant investment required in industrial-grade hardware and electricity.
